Danforth Hall Colby-Sawyer College New London, New Hampshire This is a new residence hall for 110 students using the concept of residential suites that each house 10 students with shared living spaces. The building integrates a working greenhouse and conservatory with adjunct seminar room and faculty offices. The building is set in the context of other residence halls. Its envelope reflects the Georgian revival theme of the campus and the adjoining residence halls. The stepped footprint of this 36,000 square foot building helps to reduce its scale and to fit the pattern of adjacent buildings. Project objectives included siting to take advantage of views of the Kearsarge Range and solar exposure to benefit the greenhouse/conservatory as well as the building’s common living spaces. The central corridor to access the suites terminates at both ends in seating areas that benefit from access to natural light and views. |
